Unique Home Care Limited

As the economic downturn worsens and heavy snow causes problems throughout the country, it's rare to find a ray of sunshine or glimmer of hope. But that is exactly what is offered and to be found at Bishop Auckland based business Unique Home Care Limited.

Company Director Linda Whelan set up her business in 2002 with the support of The Enterprise Agency and it is going from strength to strength. Employing 110 staff, the thriving business continues to recruit despite the current economic climate. Moving into larger office accommodation at Innovation House, South Church Enterprise Park as part of current expansion plans.

“We care for adults and children in their own homes ensuring that they enjoy the best quality of life. Respecting their independence and dignity is essential to how we work and we take great care choosing reliable and friendly staff,” says Linda.

Unique Home Care is constantly recruiting carers to the expanding company and this week alone has interviewed sixty eight potential candidates at the Newton Aycliffe Job Centre.

As an Investors in People accredited business, continuous professional development is provided for all Unique’s carers, for the benefit of its clients. “We promote Care as a vocation, it is a fantastic career for the right type of person and it is also proving to be recession-proof.” adds Linda.

In house training and qualifications cover all aspects of Health and Social Care, the Protection of Vunerable Adults (POVA) and Occupational Health and Safety. But staff development is not limited to caring, all of the management team originally recruited as carers have further developed their skills and competences through formal business and management qualifications.

Galina Vandenberg was recruited through a work experience scheme in 2002 at just sixteen years of age. With the Unique’s support and training she is now company Finance Officer.

Unique Home Care’s ethos on management is clear, to manage carers, you really do need to have been a carer yourself to understand what is involved.
